Outdoor Adventures to Pursue in North Wales

North Wales is a beautiful place at any time of year, but now that the weather seems to be finally getting its act together (about time, Mother Nature!), you are really doing yourself a disservice by not going to see its natural beauty with your own eyes.

Rolling hills of green and myriad sheep aren’t the only things worth looking at, however – there are plenty of breath-taking manmade structures including castles and railways.

Here are some of our favourite picks for North Wales adventures. Use it as a list of recommendations and get out and explore this weekend!

Conwy – Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle is arguably the most popular castle in all of Cymru, and it’s pretty easy to see why, once you have it right in front of you. It is an incredibly well preserved castle, dating back to the late 13th Century.

It has played a big part in the history of Wales – it was built by Edward I during his Welsh conquest, was Richard II’s safe haven and was sieged by Charles I’s loyalists during the Civil War. It’s a World Heritage Site, and the views from the eight giant towers are simply magnificent.

Blaenau Ffestiniog – Llechwedd Slate Caverns

The slate caverns down in Llechwedd are famous for having the steepest passenger railway in the country, and you can take a trip down (and hopefully back up again) on the Deep Mine tour. A ghost will be your tour guide – what better guide than an ethereal Victorian miner?

It has won a number of big tourism awards, and you can experience what life would’ve been like for the miners. There’s the Victorian Village, where you can buy some old-fashioned sweeties and sip on a pint in the local, but when you’re done there you’ll want to take a ride on the Miners’ Tramway!

Snowdonia – Tree Top Adventures

Snowdon is the biggest draw of all the attractions in North Wales: it is the highest UK mountain outside of Scotland and sits in the middle of the gorgeous Snowdonia National Park, known as the Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri to the locals.

With some of the best views in the British Isles, the mountain itself is reason enough for a day out, never mind the fact that the Snowdon Mountain Railway can take you all the way (nearly 5 miles) to the top.

However, if that is somehow still not enough for you (you lot are so hard to please sometimes!), then let us suggest Tree Top Adventures, a huge adventure park set in the sprawling forestry.

If you’re after a bit of a thrill, this is the perfect place for you to come – whether you want to scramble to the top of a hill or abseil down, there will be something you’ll enjoy here. It is home to the highest powerfan parachute simulator in the world, and you can even have fun paddling along in a kayak!
