The Benefits of Technology in Dog Training for Professionals

When people get a new dog, whether it’s a purebred from a breeder or a mutt from the pound, they may want to consider some kind of training.  Not everyone needs a perfectly trained working dog, but every owner will appreciate a dog that responds to basic commands. Working dogs require more training than other types, especially those used in police work or those who guide blind people.  Ordinary training may not be enough, which is why some professionals rely on the use of e collars to help teach their dogs.

Technical Options in Electronic Training Collars

An electronic training collar helps teach a dog what it should be doing in one of two ways: positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement.  In other words, if you tell the dog to come to you, and it doesn’t, you can apply stimulation.  That reinforcement of the electronic stimulation will let the dog know it didn’t do what is was supposed to.  The next time, hopefully the dog will come as soon as the handler calls.  On the other hand, the owner can also give a command and a mild stimulus immediately, and when the dog follows the command, then the stimulation ceases.  People may have concerns about how the systems work.  They may want to know some of the following information about training collars for dogs:

  • Stimulation levels can be adjusted to fit different sizes and temperaments
  • Stimulation types: momentary and constant, which is used for stubborn dogs
  • It has a vibrating pager as an attention getter before any jolt
  • There are different types of output units depending on the dog’s disposition

Training Dogs to Serve

Training a search dog or drug sniffing dog is not easy.  They have to perform complex tasks to support the human beings who don’t have the same powerful nose.  The police dog handler’s job is unique in that he deals with an animal as well as with human suspects and civilians.  The handler needs to be able to trust the dog like a partner.  That’s why extensive training is so critical.  Dedication to repeating basic tasks is important, and an e collar can be a big part of that.  Electronic training collars are customizable, so the dog can get the reminders it needs faster.  That means it can learn the routine faster, and it can then get on the job sooner.  One of the unique factors of working dogs is they may end up being far away from their handler.  An e collar can have a working range of up to a mile.  That makes it easy to get the dog to return if necessary.

Handler Transmitter Details

The electronic training collar comes with a hand-held transmitter that is designed to be user friendly.  It also lets the handler customize the stimulation levels for each dog.  The transmitter comes with a few important features.

  • The LCD screen is visible even in the dark.
  • It can have around 100 different stimulation levels
  • The transmitter and receiver are both waterproof
  • Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries

With these features, the handler knows how the battery is doing, he knows if the stimulation level is appropriate, and he won’t worry about the transmitter losing power in the rain.   The collar will come with an owner’s manual, which will make it easy to learn how to use the technology to train a great working dog.  An e collar is a great method of training almost any dog.
