Tips for Safe Trick-Or-Treating this Halloween

As Halloween approaches lots of car dealers like Thompson Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Edgewood want you to be safe as you enjoy a night out with your children trick-or-treating.

For kids, Halloween night is one of the most exciting nights of the year. I mean who doesn’t love free candy, and lots of it! From the candy to the costumes, Halloween is such a fun holiday for the kids and parents too. However, it can have some dangers. Please use these safety precaution tips to help you have a fun filled night.

As well all know Halloween can be very dangerous for the young pedestrian trick-or-treaters. It’s also mush harder for drivers to see our kids at night on the roads, especially if they are in dark colored costumes, that’s why it’s better to have your child choose a light colored costume and wear something reflective or a light up device.

Safety tips for trick-or-treaters:
  • Choose make-up instead of masks if possible, because it could obscure vision and hinder breathing. If your child does choose a mask make sure the holes for the eyes and mouth are oversized. It’s also a great idea to have them take thier mask off in between visiting each house, and while crossing the street.
  • Use reflective stickers wherever possible. Such as: on bags, consumes, shoes, ect. This will help drivers to see your child better. You can also have them wear and carry glow sticks. Choose bright colors and flame-retardant materials when picking a costume.
  • Make sure it fits. Make sure your child’s costumes fits well to prevent them from falling or tripping, and avoid oversized shoes or high heels.
  • Stay on sidewalks and pathways. When needing to cross the street be sure and watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Don’t cross the street between parked cars.
  • Join in the fun. It’s best if you go trick-or-treating with your younger children. When they are old enough to go on thier own make sure they have a group to go with.

Always check the bags:

  • Please always check your children’s candy bags. Don’t let them eat any of the candy until it has been properly checked. Sometimes it’s best to feed your children early and bring along a few tasty snacks to keep them from indulging in treats before looking them over.  Remember to throw away anything that’s not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable. If you have young children, weed out candies that can be a choking hazard.
Safety tips for drivers:
  • Slow down while traveling through residential neighborhoods and school zone areas. The most popular hours for trick-or-treaters is between 5:30 – 9:30 p.m.
  • Pay close attention, and watch for children that may dart into the street without looking. Kids are known to just cross the street anywhere on Halloween night. Be especially alert to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
  • Exit driveways slowly. Enter and exit driveways slowly.
  • Reduce any distractions. Put the cell phone down and pay attention. It’s best not to have any distractions, because of so many children that will be out on the streets during Halloween night.
  • Use your full headlights so you can see children clearly from greater distances. Remember that costumes can limit children’s visibility and they may not be able to see your vehicle.

If you still have to many concerns to go out on Halloween with younger children, consider indoor community events that have wonderful Halloween fun happening during the month of October. Some communities will even help you inspect children’s candy to make sure they’re safe.
