It’s a common practice for tutors to give regular homework to students. This practice cuts across all school subjects. In many cases, a student may find himself or herself trapped within loads of homework in different subjects. Teachers rarely take out time to think about the effect of too much homework since they feel it’s one of the most effective ways of learning.
However, research pointed out that classroom teaching and direct instruction giving by adults are the most important ways children learn new ideas. Excessive homework isn’t so contributive to the overall learning of a student. Hence, there is a need to reduce the number of homework students get and let them have more free time to learn through other processes. Here, we’ll provide seven arguments on why children should get less homework
- 1. More Rest Means More Success
Children deserve adequate rest to improve their brain performance. Homework often deprives many children of this opportunity. Some children have to stay up till late at night to complete all their take-home assignments. This makes them become so tired the following day and loose concentration in the classroom.
- 2. Homework Creates Lots of Stress
Children feel that spending long hours in school is stressful enough. The addition of homework only makes them feel the extension of the school’s stress to their various homes. Their view becomes very true and significant when the number of assignments isn’t minimal or when the level of difficulty of the work is high.
- 3. Free Time Builds Them
A child with free time can easily discover his or her talent and engage in activities that build such talent. Free time also gives children the chance to be creative as a result of an increase in the level of imagination during their free time.
- 4. It Improves Overall Mental Health
Related to what we’ve mentioned earlier, less homework will make them enjoy relaxation which improves their mental health. Sleep, for instance, is necessary for the consolidation of memory. Improved mental health means improved learning ability.
- 5. Family Time is Crucial for Growth
A child is expected to spend time with family members and learn practical life experiences that will broaden his or her knowledge. It’s during this time that a child learns family values and appreciates bonds among members of the family. Plenty of homework will isolate a child from the family as he or she will want to concentrate and finish all assignments. The cycle may keep repeating itself every day unless the child starts to get less homework.
- 6. Homework Doesn’t Measure Knowledge
Unlike classwork and tests, homework isn’t an excellent way to assess a child’s knowledge. Some students don’t take homework seriously so they don’t put in their best in it. Some don’t do their homework themselves and use assignment help. These factors make homework a poor measure of a child’s knowledge.
- 7. It lowers the Child’s Confidence
When students face difficulty with their homework, they gradually lose confidence in themselves. Low scores in homework after much struggle worsen the situation of students.
- Conclusion
When students get less homework, they’ll have the opportunity to develop themselves in several ways. There will be mental development, physical development and emotional development. Schools should focus more on other ways of enhancing learning and start to give less homework to students.
