I most recently had the opportunity in reviewing a game app on my iPad, the game is called Alphie the Squid by Crystal Entertainment. Alphie the Squid is a unique ocean exploration game that follows the journey of a wide-eyed and cute baby squid as he ventures into the depths of the ocean. Using the natural talents of the legendary squids, Alphie hunts, camouflages, and hypnotizes in order to fight sea creatures on a quest to become king of the ocean.

This game is an interesting exploration game. If you like games that don’t have much action or strategy. But, instead traveling and adventuring around a certain area and exploring and discovering great things as you progress further in the game, then this game is right for you.

In the beginning of the game you play as Alphie’s mother, until a sudden turn of events where his mother is attacked by a shark and now Alphie is on his own to grow up and survive. You first start off by eating Christmas Tree Worm, Fish Eggs, and Krill. There is a bar at the top of the screen with a heart next to it. It monitors your health as well has how much more you have to eat to grow. Each time you grow you will have the strength to swim against the current and pass into the next level. As you adventure further in the game you will unlock or ‘acquire’ new abilities. Like inking enemies, which will temporarily daze them. And hypnotizing near by food so you can eat a lot in a matter of seconds. As well as camouflaging, so near by enemies or prey cannot see you.

Including acquiring certain abilities, you as well unlock a gallery of sea animals and organisms. Along with a small excerpt about them.

Before you begin a level there is a small intermission for about 5 seconds showing a little fact about Giant Squids. They’re actually very interesting and factual. The graphics are pretty good, cool and 3 dimensional. The fish look very realistic, as well as the plants and the surroundings. This game is appropriate and not too complex for younger kids to play. I have not yet finished the game, but I have been playing it for about a week now and I really like it. I do plan on playing it more and more to get further and become the king of the ocean!

Game Trailer:

This game is accessible for both adults and children as it is relaxing and provides hours of entertainment. Alphie the Squid App has partnered with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. For every download of the game, $1 of proceeds goes to the aquarium’s Children Education Fund. Apple has also featured the game as “Best New Game Update” in 118 countries last week.  That was very exciting for them because it validates that kids and parents love the game. This game is still a 4.5 out of 5 stars on the App store.
