Dangerous Driving Habits we Should Stop Doing

Driving can be dangerous even for people who consider themselves experienced safe drivers. Even if you’ve been to drivers Ed, and feel you are a very skilled, experienced driver with an excellent record, anyone could make a serious error while on the road, and cause an accident. When we are negligent while driving, this can cause accidents, and harm to others. Remember just because you have been driving for years, even an everyday habit can have the same effect. When out on the road, the smallest mistake can turn deadly in just a matter of a few seconds. Did you know many car accidents aren’t not really accidents at all? To often they are the result of distracted driving.

Stay alert and avoid these dangerous driving habits:

  1. Bad Weather. It’s very important to be aware of the current weather conditions, and making sure to take this into consideration when deciding it’s OK to drive. If you decide to drive in snow, sleet, wet, icy roads, and weather that has caused poor visibility, you could be seriously impacting your ability to stay clear of accidents. It does not matter how long you have been driving, or how good of a driver you think you are. Bad weather can affect even the most careful drivers. If you must drive in harsh weather, make sure you have tires with the right traction, if it’s snowing you should have Winter tires. Also make sure the headlights are working properly.
  2. Drunk or Very Tired Driving. Make it a rule today to never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you know you are too tired, and or under the influence of alcohol, and drugs. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is the leading cause of auto fatalities in the U.S.
  3. Distracted Driving which is considered to be anything that involves you looking away from the road. These include: texting, and surfing the internet, taking selfies while driving, talking, eating, playing with the radio. Distracted driving is quickly becoming the biggest killer of drivers, especially teens. Be safe and practice driving without distractions.
  4. Stop Speeding. It’s time to slow down, and stop speeding. Speeding is something to many drivers do, and one of the worst habits. This can be a very deadly habit when you combined it with lots of traffic, road rage, aggression, and distracted drivers. Anything could happen, and speeding only increases the chances of an accident.
  5. Failing to Signal. Signaling is very important when you intend to make a turn or switch lanes. This can prevent accidents, and lets other drivers know that you will be turning or making a lane change.
  6. Don’t Speed Up at Yellow Light. Don’t speed up when approaching a light that just turned yellow. Always slow down when you have the option to stop safely.
  7. Following too closely. You have the option to choose how far away you are from the driver in front of you. Drivers should never choose to follow too close to another driver. Anything could happen, and the driver in front of you could stop abruptly. And this is particularly dangerous in bad weather conditions. If this happens, and you are driving to close you will hit the back of that drivers car and cause an accident. Always stay two car lengths away from the vehicle in front of you.
  8. Driving Without a Seat belt. Wearing a seat belt can prevent injuries, and even death during an accident. It does not matter how far you have to drive, wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest things you can do to stay safe.
  9. Blind Turns: Always check, then double check your blind spots before backing out of a driveway, or making a lane change.
