A lot of us just cherish our car so much. We try our best to make sure everything is running swell so we can make it from point A, to point B, and maybe point C, and point D. There are a lot of components in our car we count on every day to make sure we get to our destination safely. Like for example, the brakes. Making sure your brakes are working properly is very, very crucial for a safe driving experience. Good working brakes are the prevention of so many accidents. Buy Pearson wants you to be safe on the roads, so keep reading on to find a few warning signs that’ll let you know if you need new brake pads or not.
1. Your brake pads appear to be too thin.
Before we get into the other signs to look out for, an easy one is checking to see if your car’s brake pads look too thin. You can easily see them through the spokes of your car’s wheel. You’ll see the brake pad material pressed against the metal rotor. If they appear to be too thin, get them changed immediately, to be very specific if they are less than 1/4th of an inch, it’s time to get them replaced.
2. The brake pedal is surging or vibrating.
If you have checked to see if your brake pads are too thin, but still aren’t sure if you should get new ones, another sign to look out for is when you are driving and press the brake and it feels like it is vibrating or pulsating. If it feels like its vibrating it can be caused when the binding resin on the brake pads wear down from the heat and it isn’t distributed across the rotor evenly.
3. The brakes make either grinding, clicking, or sort of a screeching noise.
So the first tip was if you could see the brake pads are to thin, then the second was if you could feel it, now you can try and hear something wrong with the brakes. While you are driving and come to a stop and press your foot on the brake and there is either a grinding, screeching or clicking noise as you do so, this means you need new brakes pads. When you hear a grinding noise this means your brake pads are completely worn down because of the brake disc and brake caliper rubbing together. If you hear a clicking noise this means over time it became damaged and parts are rattling or moving around. Now, when the screeching sound is heard it’s because the ‘wear-indicators’ most brake pads are made with are indicating you need new brakes. They only start to indicate when the pads have worn down to an unsafe point.
4. Your car takes more time to come to a stop.
If you’re noticing it is taking longer for your car to come to a complete stop when the brakes are applied. This happens if over time you use the brakes for long periods of time with no stop, without actually coming to a complete stop. For example if your driving down a hill, you’ll most likely press on the brakes as you drive down, you aren’t coming to a complete stop, but if if this happens regularly your brakes won’t have the needed friction to be used properly. It should be in your best interest to get them changed, so you won’t come across a situation where you need to come to a complete stop suddenly but your car is still rolling.
If you notice all of these signs, you need to head to mechanic as soon as possible, driving any longer even becoming aware of all these warning signs is like playing Russian Roulette.
