Tips To Help Defend Yourself from Drunk Drivers

Interstate Hyundai want’s you to be safe on the roads at all times. Use these simple tips to help defend yourself from drunk drivers.

It’s about 1:30 am, you had a long, busy day at work. A few people called in sick so you had to stay late to make up for the amount of work. You’re excited to go home to your loved one, eat dinner and relax and get some sleep. You start driving home, you’re just about 10 minutes from home now, then suddenly you see a car in the distance driving directly towards you. You check to make sure you’re not seeing things and that you are on the right side. That car is swerving, and coming faster at you.

Situations like this happen a lot. When you are on the receiving end of a drunk driver. Some drivers have never been put in the situation where they had to defend themselves and figure out ways to protect themselves from a drunk driver. In this post I’ll list some things that you should keep in mind when you are faced with a drunk driver on the road with you. These can potentially save your life, and the life of others.

However, not every drunk driver is the same, not all will drive the same. You need to pay attention, before you think you’ll have to protect yourself, make sure you identify a drunk driver accurately.

Drunk drivers tend to:

-Drive in the middle of two lanes
-Drive on the wrong side of the road
-Drive too slow, or too fast
-Abruptly braking
-Almost hitting an object or another vehicle on the road
-Turn too swiftly, or illegally
-Slow reactions
-Swerving
-Actions that don’t match signaling

If you have successfully identified a drunk driver, but are not in immediate danger here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Buckle Up.

If you aren’t already, please buckle up. Just in case of anything, you need to stay safe. Seat belts save lives.

2. Keep your distance.

Make sure, whether you are in front or behind the suspected driver make sure they aren’t too close to you. Or if you can, get into a different lane. You don’t want the drunk driver to ram into you if you have stopped and they were not aware. Nor do you want to do the same, if they have stopped abruptly. If anything, try pulling over and let the driver pass you so you won’t have to worry.

3. Drive defensively.

Be prepared to make fast actions. Whether you need to quickly turn out of the way, or brake fast. Be ready, expect the unexpected.

4. Call 911.

If you are stopped at a red light, or if you have someone in the passenger side, identify what car it is, the license plate number, and the exact area. Let law enforcement know, so they can quickly come and get the driver off the road so they can’t not harm anyone.

If You find yourself in danger from a drunk driver, here are some steps to take:

1. If the driver is headed straight towards you need to pull to the right and stop. Honk your horn multiple times and flash your lights. If you haven’t already call 911, and let the dispatcher know what happened and where you are.

2. Never turn left, you could be driving into another lane and harming others on the road. Also if the drunk driver sees you and they turn right and you turn left you both will collide into each other.

Drunk drivers kill thousands of people each year, make sure you take the right precautions. Try your best to avoid driving too late at night, especially on the weekends. Stay safe.
