Vehicle Repair Safety Tips

Lots of people like to do their own auto repair work for a few different reasons. Some people have the know how and just want to do the repair themselves. While others might be trying to save a little money or don’t have a trustworthy mechanic so they will do it on their own. If you decide you want to repair your vehicle yourself there are safety precautions you need to take. The last thing you want is to burn yourself or have a vehicle fall on you while you’re under it. Use these basic safety tips to avoid injury to yourself or vehicle:

  • It’s always important before most auto repairs begin, make sure the engine has had time to cool down. This will prevent serious burns.

  • Never smoke while performing work on your vehicle.

  • The cooling system is always very hot. Always let the vehicle cool down before removing the radiator cap. It’s best to give it a couple of hours to completely cool down.

  • Before working make sure not to wear loose fitting clothing, remove other accessories such as ties, rings, long necklaces etc. If you have long hair be sure to tie that back as well. Never work on any part of the electrical system before disconnecting the battery. Also be sure the key is in the “off” position when doing any work on the electronic components of the vehicle. Along with using insulated tools on the electronic components.

  • Absolutely never work on your vehicle until you have shut off the engine (unless it has to be running for a particular job you need to do). Also make sure the parking brake is on, and the is in Park or Neutral.

  • Make sure there is proper ventilation, and never work on a running vehicle in an enclosed area.
