Why is my baby not sleeping?

Several factors can contribute to a baby’s difficulty sleeping, regardless of his or her age. They are as follows:

  1. Exhaustion

Babies that are overtired may have difficulty sleeping. They may require additional assistance to fall asleep, such as rocking or nursing. Maintain a constant napping pattern, especially when traveling or during other times of disruption, such as vacations, to avoid tiredness.

2. Discomfort

If a baby is in pain, he or she may find it difficult to sleep. For example, sick babies may wake up multiple times during the night. Even slight annoyances might disrupt sleep. A scratchy clothing tag, an overly hot or cold environment, or a damp diaper can all make sleeping difficult.

3. Separation anxiety

Every baby is unique, and some develop stronger relationships with their parents or caregivers than others. Most babies, however, will feel separation anxiety, which can make sleeping more difficult.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies spend at least 6 months, if not a year, in the room of their caregiver. This may also make nighttime nursing easier.

4. Hunger

During the first six months of life, babies frequently wake up during the night to breastfeed. Even if a baby sleeps through the night, they may wake up occasionally due to hunger.

Smacking the lips, thrusting out the tongue, and sucking on the hands are all signs that a newborn is hungry.

5. Scheduling issues

It’s possible that very young newborns will not sleep on a regular schedule. Older babies, on the other hand, tend to develop a sleep pattern. Deviating from this schedule may cause them to lose their sleep pattern, causing them to wake up later than usual.

Establish a bedtime and naptime sleep practice that includes singing songs or reading books to avoid this. Stick to this schedule and put the baby to bed at the same time every day.

As babies age, their napping patterns may change, causing their schedules to fluctuate. Stick to the new schedule as it becomes evident.


Babies sleep differently than adults, and they may wake up numerous times during the night or have difficulty falling asleep on an adult’s schedule. Waking up in the middle of night is normal for babies but if you find that your infant is not sleeping at all then you should check for the above problems. You can also pay a visit to your baby doctor if your infant is not sleeping at all at night.
