In winter, there is often nothing better than curling up on the sofa with the one you love and watching a romantic movie. Nights in like these are becoming more and more popular with couples, who want to avoid the party lifestyle and relax at home. Just because you’re staying in, doesn’t mean you can’t have all the benefits of a romantic date. There are plenty of ways to up the romance factor if you really want to ensure that the night starts and ends well for you both!
Try cooking a romantic meal from scratch and showing your partner how much they mean to you. Buy flowers and set the dining table for a meal before you settle down to watch a movie. Little touches like some hand-made chocolates or cakes from a local boutique will really show you’re trying to push the boat out.
Some classic movies to watch on romantic nights in this winter and all year round include the below. These are just a starting point to set you on the right track, so make sure that you pick a movie your partner will enjoy!
Love Actually: This hit 2003 movie was written and directed by the master of romance writing himself, Richard Curtis. Curtis is known for his string of hit films as well as the TV show ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ which gained a big cult following around the world. Love Actually stars Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson and many more. It focuses on the lives of eight couples who are all in various relationships. Some more successful than others! With a Christmas setting, this movie is perfect for cold dark evenings in front of a roaring fire.
Notting Hill: Another one written by Richard Curtis. This stars Hugh Grant (again!) but sees him play the role of a bookshop owner whose life is changed forever when he meets a famous actress in London. Played by Julia Roberts. Inviting her in after spilling his coffee on her the two fall into a relationship. This is a heartwarming film with genuinely funny undertones and classic British humor. Set with a London backdrop, you can even arrange to visit the movie locations next time you’re in town!
Jerry Maguire: Show me the money! This is one of Jerry Maguire’s coined turn of phrases that he’s forced to scream down the phone in a bid to keep his last remaining client. Quitting his job to start a new business of his own, Jerry must rely on the help of a former employee. Renee Zellweger plays her role with absolute brilliance, and her adorable son is bound to win the hearts of everyone viewing. This is a classic that you’ll watch time and time again. Just remember: “You had me at hello”.
Bridget Jones’s Diary: Renee Zellweger is back and this time she’s in a very different role altogether. Proving that she can perfectly master the British accent is a breeze for this star! Bridget is a typical British woman with more than her fair share of issues. She drinks too much, smokes too much and always seems to fall for the wrong man. When the wonderful Mark Darcy falls for her, is it too good to be true? If his old rival Daniel Cleaver has anything to do with it the probably! Hugh Grant and Colin Firth do a fabulous job of being two men vying for Bridget’s attention. One character rather more sincerely than the other, of course. Don’t forget that the third Bridget Jones book has recently been released. If you’re a fan of happy ending stories, it might not be for you though!
Pretty Woman: This now iconic romance focuses on the life of a call girl named Vivien and a businessman called Edward. He employs her to stay with him for the week to be at his ‘beck and call’ whilst he deals with a stressful week. What ensues is one of the best, touching and most romantic movies of all time. This will be one that is sure to impress most women. Don’t forget to copy Edward and order strawberries and champagne for your lovely lady to enjoy whilst she watches!
Sex Drive: This is one for the guys. In a brief overview of sex drive, the movie we can say that this is a rude, crude but highly entertaining film! Focusing on how far one boy will go to meet a girl he’s been talking to online. It stars a whole host of famous faces including Seth Rogen and Fall Out Boy. Worth a watch if you want a laugh out loud comedy that your man will enjoy.
The Great Gatsby: Based on the classic novel by F.Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby was brought to the big screen in 2013 by Baz Luhrmann. Set in the roaring, 20’s it is full of glamor, rivalry and epic romance that will leave you speechless. Leonardo Dicaprio’s portrayal of Jay Gatsby is perfect on every level and captivates the audience from start to finish. A joy of a spectacle to behold!
Pride and Prejudice: Brought to the big screen in 2005, Pride and Prejudice is classic. It may not live up to the British TV show of the same name, but it is still an enjoyable movie with a great cast. Keira Knightley plays Elizabeth. We see her start off resenting Mr Darcy and eventually falling in love when she sees the real him. Great for a night in with a bottle of wine!
Dirty Dancing: Another classic movie. This one sees ‘Baby’ Frances Houseman (played by Jennifer Grey) fall in love with the ‘bad boy’ staff member Johnny Castle while on vacation. Johnny is forever immortalized by the talented, and sadly missed, Patrick Swayze. A classic that will have you singing and dancing along all evening!
So if those movies don’t set you on track for the night of romance then we’re fresh out of ideas! Remember to get the drinks flowing and a nice warm fire at the ready for the ultimate mood setting.
